BBC and the Bruised Ego!

A number of years ago, the author was involved with BBC Wales in the making of a programme called Jamie and Derek’s Welsh Weekends, featuring the television newsreader and broadcaster Jamie Owen and BBC weatherman Derek Brockway. The filming, in Mold town centre, was carried out on a cold May Bank Holiday Saturday morning, whilst the crowded street market was in full swing. As may be expected, the presence of two well-known figures attracted a lot of attention and, during a break in filming, we were approached by a lady keen to meet television personalities. She, first of all, told Jamie that she always watched the BBC Wales news, and his wonderful travel programmes, then turned to Derek and made similar comments about watching the weather and his programme The Weatherman Walking. After singing their praises for some time she turned to the author, standing between the two stars, and remarked, ‘Should I know you?’ – So much for fame!
